Spatiotemporal Satellite Image Downscaling with Transfer Encoders and Autoregressive Generative Models
Xiang, Yang, Zhong, Jingwen, Yan, Yige, Koutrakis, Petros, Garshick, Eric, Franklin, Meredith
We present a transfer-learning generative downscaling framework to reconstruct fine resolution satellite images from coarse scale inputs. Our approach combines a lightweight U-Net transfer encoder with a diffusion-based generative model. The simpler U-Net is first pretrained on a long time series of coarse resolution data to learn spatiotemporal representations; its encoder is then frozen and transferred to a larger downscaling model as physically meaningful latent features. Our application uses NASA's MERRA-2 reanalysis as the low resolution source domain (50 km) and the GEOS-5 Nature Run (G5NR) as the high resolution target (7 km). Our study area included a large area in Asia, which was made computationally tractable by splitting into two subregions and four seasons. We conducted domain similarity analysis using Wasserstein distances confirmed minimal distributional shift between MERRA-2 and G5NR, validating the safety of parameter frozen transfer. Across seasonal regional splits, our model achieved excellent performance (R2 = 0.65 to 0.94), outperforming comparison models including deterministic U-Nets, variational autoencoders, and prior transfer learning baselines. Out of data evaluations using semivariograms, ACF/PACF, and lag-based RMSE/R2 demonstrated that the predicted downscaled images preserved physically consistent spatial variability and temporal autocorrelation, enabling stable autoregressive reconstruction beyond the G5NR record. These results show that transfer enhanced diffusion models provide a robust and physically coherent solution for downscaling a long time series of coarse resolution images with limited training periods. This advancement has significant implications for improving environmental exposure assessment and long term environmental monitoring.

'Star Trek: Picard' actors reunite for final season, Patrick Stewart says Jean Luc 'not the same person'
William Shatner, 'Star Trek' alum and author of'Boldly Go,' spoke to Fox News Digital about his decadeslong friendship with Leonard Nimoy, as well as his iconic on-screen kiss with Nichelle Nichols. "Star Trek" fans can bask in nostalgia, as the cast of the iconic science fiction series has reunited. After more than two decades, "Star Trek: Nemesis" actors, including Gates McFadden, LeVar Burton, Jonathan Frakes and Patrick Stewart, revealed the decision to reprise their famous roles and what it was like working together on the spacecraft again on "Star Trek: Picard." Stewart, who's known for his role as Jean Luc Picard in the "Star Trek" franchise, gave fans a preview of what they can expect in the current series. "Star Trek: Nemesis" actors, including, from left, Jonathan Frakes, Patrick Stewart, Gates McFadden, LeVar Burton and Michael Dorn, reprise their famous roles on "Star Trek: Picard."

'Halo Infinite' Season 3 delayed to March, with Forge arriving November
November may also bring a long-awaited fix demanded by the community: new ways to earn experience points. As of now, the game relies on completing challenges that many (including myself) have criticized as too restrictive for a video game meant to be played at a relaxed pace of our choosing. These challenges force players into modes and play styles that they may not necessarily want to play. Going forward, players will experience a new "Match XP beta," along with a new free battle pass. The studio did not expand on how this match experience system works, nor did they detail what this non-season battle pass might look like, but promised updates -- regularly, and soon.
What do Experts Say about LaMDA - Google's Artificial Intelligence?
We are well aware that Google's Artificial Intelligence is one of the most advanced technologies in this field. In other words, it is not surprising that Google is capable of developing an Artificial Intelligence that understands how the human brain operates and can imitate its capabilities… Those of us who are customers of this company have been impressed on multiple occasions by their ability to know each other too well and to anticipate our every move. Blake Lemoine, a Google engineer, expressed surprise at the possibility of Google's technology knowing us and imitating our behavior based on predictions about our preferences. It all began when Blake Lemoine was working on the advancements of LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications), a Google Artificial Intelligence designed to have conversations and eventually perfect Google searches by analyzing sentences and patterns in conversation, one of the many ways that artificial intelligences operate and learn. This project's primary objective is to ensure that the responses of Google's Artificial Intelligence in conversations transcend the automatic responses that characterize bots, for instance, and that different topics can be covered and a dialogue can progress naturally.

Westworld season 4: everything we know
Westworld season 4 was confirmed a couple of weeks before the season 3 finale aired in May 2020, suggesting that HBO still has plenty of faith in its big-budget sci-fi drama. "From the western theme park to the technocratic metropolis of the near future, we've thoroughly enjoyed every twist and turn from the minds of master storytellers Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy," said president of HBO programming, Casey Bloys in a company statement. "We can't wait to see where their inspired vision takes us next." Showrunners Nolan and Joy are back to continue their epic tale – based on the 1973 movie directed by Jurassic Park author Michael Crichton – and, going on past form, it's probably best to expect the unexpected. In its third year, the drama took a hard turn away from the android theme park setting at the heart of the first two seasons, spending most of its time in the human world.

'Love Death and Robots' Season 3 comes to Netflix on May 20th
The third season of Netflix's animation anthology Love, Death and Robots will bow on May 20th. The streamer teased the release with a short video showing the same adult-oriented themes and wide variety of animation styles as the previous volumes. The series is produced by Tim Miller and David Fincher, who has a four-year exclusivity deal with Netflix. In the trailer, Netflix showed short clips of The Crown, The Queen's Gambit and other shows as a way to contrast them with the far more intense "problem child" animated show. "The threesome you've been waiting for," the tagline states.

Thales to Spark Innovation among Five AI Startups with Season 3 of AI@Centech Program
Thales has launched Season 3 of AI@Centech, a business accelerator designed to help artificial-intelligence focused startups tackle real-world problems. Thales selected five international startups in early August out of a pool of more than 200 potential competitors from around the world. The search for qualified startups began in February when the program published challenges ranging from how to more efficiently use AI to manage satellites to applying augmented cognition to improve human decision-making. The selected startups will work closely with Thales business coaches and AI experts who will advise them on critical skills such as fundraising, product enhancement, design, visibility, proof-of-concept, and market access. Season 3 of AI@Centech follows last year's successful second season of the program, which resulted in many achievements such as Thales and MyDataModels winning a bid with the municipality of Nice Côte d'Azur, France for underwater threat detection.

Life Imitates Orwell...
And I am talking Season 3. Or Amazon's hit, The Handmaid's Tale? Do you just binge and veg out or are you like me, and see how easily we could, and are, slipping into these worlds? After watching shows like this I often find myself reflecting back on George Orwell's 1984. It proves more eerily prophetic with each passing year. This Season, I fear, the writers of Westworld are almost scripting our future lives. You may not have caught it, but it is all in there.

Westworld's season 3 trailer pits AI against AI in an intense showdown
The first season of Westworld focused on the idea of artificial intelligence and humans co-mingling in one epic theme park. The second season saw those same artificially intelligent beings lead a revolution against their human counterparts. In Westworld's third season, Dolores has escaped from the Delos-owned park she called home -- or perhaps prison is the more correct word choice. She teams up with Aaron Paul's character, who she tasks with taking down a mysterious person who took his future away. Maeve, who also escaped, is given a pretty hefty task of her own: kill Dolores.
